in Hyalite Canyon in Gallatin National Forest

Regional Map

At 6,100 feet in Hyalite Canyon, Langohr Campground sits on the site of the first ranger station for the national forest. A short interpretive trail crosses the creek in the campground, and Hyalite Canyon is packed with hiking and mountain-biking trails, but the most popular trails depart from the no-wake Hyalite Reservoir area five miles farther up the road. The Blackmore picnic area and boat launch sits at the northwest corner of the reservoir. Hyalite Creek, which flows through the campground, harbors rainbow and Yellowstone cutthroat trout. Class IV-V stretches of white water in the canyon north of the campground draw expert kayakers.

The campground has two paved loops with paved campsite spurs lining up along Hyalite Creek. Most of the campsites enjoy creek frontage. The campground sits in a wild garden of midsummer color with yarrow, sticky pink geraniums, cow parsnips, and bladder campions surrounded by a Douglas fir forest. The lush surroundings make up for the fact that you can see neighboring campers, despite the spread-out sites. After dark, a few late hikers still race back down the canyon to Bozeman on the adjacent road (which you can see above), but then only the sound of the stream remains. Most of the campsites have views of meadow hillsides and mixed forest slopes.

Campsites, facilities: The campground has 19 RV or tent campsites. RVs are limited to 32 feet. Facilities include picnic tables, fire rings with grills, vault toilets, drinking water, garbage service, bear boxes, firewood for sale, and campground host. Leashed pets are permitted. Wheelchair-accessible facilities include toilets, a trail, and two campsites.

Reservations, fees: Reservations are accepted (877/444-6777, www.recreation.gov). Campsites cost $14. An extra vehicle costs $6. Cash, check, or credit card. Open mid-May-mid-September.

Directions: From downtown Bozeman, drive west on Highway 191 to Cottonwood Road. Turn south and drive 5.5 miles. Turn east onto South 19th Avenue and go one mile. Turn south onto Hyalite Canyon Road, which turns into Forest Road 62. Climb 5.9 miles to the campground entrance on the right.
